San Diego young guns build trails and shred them!

Posted: Dec 15, 2008

Many people might think kids just ride and don't put in the time to maintain and build new trails, but these San Diego young guns are really making a difference at their local riding spots by changing this stereotype...

Local San Diego DH riders Luca Cometti, Dakota Goulder, Sami Gowdy, Lucas Cowan, And Alex Silverman age 13 to 16 decided, last summer they were going to change their selfish ways of riding without ever maintaining or building new trails. They realized if so much time was spent riding their local spots why not put some time into maintaining trails, as well as building new trails for their fellow riders.

The first local spot they decided to build a trail at was Ted Williams, located in Poway CA. Known for big hits and fast technical DH, it was a perfect place for a new trail. The second location is right in the neighborhood where all of the riders live. It was burned in a recent fire so there is endless opportunity for new trails. The First trail in the video is called 4gies and the second trail is named The Arbors. Hope you like the video...

All photos from Ted Williams (Not the trail).

Thanks for reading!

i resent that stereotype and who ever started it im sure every kid who started of riding will of built there own jumps. Quite frankly when don't they, i have always built or helped out at trails or jumps as we where not aloud to ride with the "big boys" lol.

If i lived anywhere near anywhere that I was allowed to build trails, I would and I would build and build and build!
But..
Every field around me is used for cattle so has piles of hoof holes.. anywhere else close to me i have asked and I am not allowed!

Good Riding and Good Building - I need more hits to test out my LEATT brace on. Just Kidding I wouldn't of known about that brace if I didn't see you riding with one. Great Vid, better than the probuiltwheels vid on youtube. If your ever down at the beach bring your rigs, there are some jumps and good drops at Sunset cliffs south of OB

no offence and all, at all; but the artical makes it out that these kids are some sort of prodigies because they are building trails at the age of about 16? Theres a lot more young people out building trails other than just these guys? and theres trails built that are a lot better too?! can we not get a universal shout out instead of just picking out a medeocre example and worshipping it like some godly act?

That made no sense. Freeriders are "mindless huckers" if they don't race? As to San Diego trails, I grew up in El Cajon and I was riding most of those trail spots before you were born, so I'm well aware of what's up. All the more reason to do it legally...

I just think its stupid to be posting spots on a web site that could potentially get closed down. 90 % of thos trails have been built before these young guns started riding. If only they just gave everyone mapquest directions to it and were to park. Good job.
  • - 2
flag robholio (Dec 17, 2008 at 17:01)
How so? Building illegal trails is dumb all by itself. Maybe if all of the builders down there united and got organized and went about establishing legal ride spots and stewarded the trails on a regular basis, you'd actually WANT to get the word out about spots like this. And newsflash: even people up here in Oregon know where those trails start and where they end, so it's no mystery. The whole "my beach, my wave, my trail" attitude is just weak. Just my 2 cents

all the shit people are saying about this should stop.
I live in little old ashland, oregon, and as we fight just to keep our trails legal, the community gets angry at local bikers and post articles in the newspaper about "how we don't show respect for the mountain" for making what they can out of the area that they can legally make trails on.

and being that i'm 13 as well, it's really cool to see other guys out there putting a lot of effort into making the trails more enjoyable for everyone.

good job guys.

Too bad, the mountain bike community is too weak and unorganised to make this kids able to build legal trails. Unfortunately, even if in a short term it's sweet to have new trails, this kind of trail creation on a private property and without any ecological considerationwon't help to promote freeriding in the SD area. BTW the secret spot attitude is just completely stupid, maybe it can help you to keep your spot one more month but you're sure it's going to be wiped out at some point. The only successfull way to keep a trail system for a long term is buil legally with the community agreement. An article about the legal opportunuty to build trails at the future SDMBA skill park at Mission trails or at Vail Lake.
As an example, watch what happened to the "secret trails" at Flightline and how new trails can be build and preserved at La costa when builders work with the different organisations and agencies... I'm not (yet) member of the SDMBA but I thing you guys would better try to be massively involved in a local organustion to work together instead of wating your time on internet (like me)

I ride Ted's at lunch a couple times a week (I'm prob the only guy you'll see riding UP on my hardtail so I can enjoy the DH) I love the place but fear that if people build unintelligently (some of the trails are horrible and unridable at this point as the grade was bad and the water just created 3' deep ruts in the trail.

Please build intelligently and don't piss off land owners or Ted's will be the next tunnels.... I miss the tunnels Frown
